Project Background

The main objective of the AVANTI project is to demonstrate that it is possible to develop generic multimedia telecommunications applications, which are adaptable and adaptive to the requirements of most potential users including disabled people, elderly people, occasional users and other users whom we like to term 'professionals
The project focuses on the application domain of improving mobility of citizens from all walks of life in the touristic context. This means that information distribution by telecommunications and computers will be made available to assist in the planning of transport and accommodation as well as in support of the day to day activities of the typical traveller or tourist inflation.
In such a context information can exist in several types of medium on different computers. AVANTI will also integrate data from multiple ordinarily incompatible databases and fuse the data into one transparent source tailored to the end users requirements. By ensuring that the information delivery process is optimised to suit the end user and the information providers needs, AVANTI will provide an information delivery platform with powerful features not seen before.

AVANTI is both theoretical and practical. Practical testing will be conducted in field trials relating to important Pan European social events (e.g. Jubilee 2000). By providing the pilot core of essential multimedia mobility related information, benefiting potentially thousands of tourists and other travellers in a uniquely specific way, the AVANTI system will be evaluated in a context which provides thorough indications of how the characteristics of a real application, could be commercial exploited on a massive scale.
